Found an Animal

I found an animal!
Now what?

We hope you'll agree that you have a responsibility to utilize every resource to help find the animal's family.

NOTE: If you've found a cat with an ear tip (click here for photo), and the cat appears healthy and is not injured, they are a community cat and not someone's lost pet - let them be. If the cat does not appear healthy or is injured, you can notify your local animal control. You can also reach out to local organizations that specialize in community cats (search online: "community cats (insert name of your city)".

SCAN

If the pet doesn't have a tag, take them to the nearest veterinarian or animal shelter. They will scan the animal for a microchip - it's FREE.

2

ASK

Ask around (neighbors, runners, mail carriers, etc.) to see if they recognize the pet. Especially ask people who are walking dogs. They often know which pet belongs to which house.

3

POST FLYERS

Post flyers on street lights. If it's an apartment or condo, post near mailboxes, pool, or any area where a large number of residents will see it. Make sure anyone who claims to be the owner, is legit. Ask for proof of ownership (ie picture of them w/pet).

4

POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA

There are Facebook pages dedicated to reuniting pets with owners. Google "Lost and Found Pets of (insert name of your county)". Again, be sure to ask for proof of ownership (ie picture of them w/pet)

5

NOTIFY SHELTERS

Notify local shelters - both municipal shelters (aka animal control) & private shelters (SPCAs, Humane Societies) because the owner may have notified them too.

6

NOTIFY RESCUES

Notify local rescues if you think they can help. For example, if you found a Poodle or Poodle Mix, contact local Poodle rescues. Rescue volunteers often have social media feeds full of animals. They may recognize the animal you've found from a "Lost Pet" post they saw.

7

SHELTER

If you are unable to keep the pet while looking for the owner, bring them to a shelter. They will put the animal on a "stray hold" which is typically a few days in order to give the family time to claim the animal. If no one claims them, they will be placed for adoption or the shelter will often reach out to rescue groups.*

*Shelter protocols vary.
